The city of Townsville leads north Queensland in many ways. It is the sporting capital of the north with teams in the national rugby league, the national basketball league and the national soccer federation plus one of the annual events on the V8 supercar races is run on a street circuit here every year. These teams are heavily supported throughout the north and make Townsville a weekend destination for thousands of domestic tourists. Tertiary education in the north centers around the James Cook University which turns out thousands of graduates every year and the Australian armed forces have bases here for all divisions including army, navy and airforce. All of these things generate a buzz of activity that makes Townsville one of the busiest and most vibrant cities in the country.

Oaks Getaway on Palmer

Over the last decade, the accommodation industry in Townsville has had a real shot in the arm. The Strand region has been redeveloped by the council and the Palmer Street precinct along Ross creek has developed as well. Both of these regions now boast modern apartment style resort accommodation and trendy restaurants and diners are popping up in both regions. The nightlife now around the city CBD and the Palmer Street precinct in particular is warm and vibrant and attracts locals and tourists alike to have a great time in Townsville. Tourism into Townsville has also been jump started of recent times. Not long ago, Townsville had very few tourists and was classed as a corporate destination only. Today, times have changed for the better and tourists now visit Townsville in large numbers. Some are attracted by the casino, some by the local presence of nearby Magnetic Island and others are passing through while touring along the coast and now tend to stay for a while in Townsville and enjoy its vibrant ambience.

Both the Great Barrier Reef and magnetic Island are close by. Anyone staying in an apartment on the strand will have a view over the ocean and Magnetic Island. The Island can be visited via a fast catamaran service or a vehicular ferry which both run on regular timetables from Townsville. A short drive north from Townsville will take you to the beautiful rainforests and mountain streams of the Paluma Range and the beaches along the north coast are great for fishing and boating.

Townsville is both a cosmopolitan city with plenty of shopping, great restaurants and excellent accommodation a well as being a growing part of the immense Queensland tourism industry.
