Port Douglas has become one of Australia’s leading international tourist destinations. Once a sleepy beachside tropical village, two main events have changed its destiny for ever. The late Chritopher Skase came to Port Douglas in the early eighties and built the Sheraton Mirage Resort on the beachfront there and when he did so, he lifted the entire profile of the town by including a resort golf course and by upgrading the town’s entrance road and its appearance. Several years later, Bill Clinton, who was the incumbent president of the United States, brought his wife and family to holiday in Port Douglas and this put the town firmly on the international travel agenda. Port Douglas now has grown into a luxury resort town with lots of new resorts to choose from, a great commercial area full of shopping and restaurant options and a marina that offers aquatic tours to the Great Barrier Reef. Port Douglas is also the most popular departure point for the Daintree rainforest and the cape tribulation regions that lie to the north of Port Douglas and are internationally recognized tourist destinations in their own right.
Port Douglas lies a little over an hours drive north of Cairns and the international airport there is the main point of access. The road from Cairns to Port Douglas is famous in its own right as it runs right along the coast, hugging the coconut palm lined beaches and excavated from the headlands so the fantastic views of the Coral Sea are visible almost right along its length. Tourist shuttles and limos are a common sight along this stretch of road as the ferry tourist from cairns airport to their Port Douglas accommodation. Many tourists now start their Australian Holiday in North Queensland from Cairns and use Port Douglas as their first stopover, while touring out into the hinterland from their luxury resort to visit the regions magnificent attractions. Port Douglas is a must see addition for any Australian holiday.
