Orpheus Island is one of the more exclusive holiday retreats that are situated on the Australian coastline. The island is situated just north of Townsville off the coastal town of Lucinda and has a tropical climate. Orpheus Island is a continental island and its bays and shoreline are surrounded by fringing coral reefs. The resort itself lies on the northwest side of the island and is protected from the prevailing south easterly sea breezes. The island can only be reached by seaplane from Townsville and there are no ferry services that come to the island for guests to use. The resort itself is world famous as a retreat for the affluent. It is set among magnificent tropical gardens that line the beachfront and only caters for a limited number of guests at any time. The accommodation is five star and caters for couples, and it also is set out along the beachfront amid the sensational gardens. The main restaurant and service complex are centrally located and all the accommodation units are only a short stroll away. Orpheus Island is mostly about quiet relaxation and fantastic food. The restaurant is open to the beach and ocean and all the tables have a terrific water view. The island is famous for its fantastic, multi course, degustation style dinners and these are complimented by an incredible wine list. A few days spent on Orpheus Island may add a couple of centimeters to the waistline if you are not careful!
The James Cook University, based in Townsville, has a research center on Orpheus Island which is located on the next bay north from the resort. The reef here has large numbers of giant clams that the university has been studying for many years. Guests are welcome to snorkel through this area and they will also see many other species of coral on the local reef systems. There are many beautiful bushwalks to take around Orpheus and the one that goes to the summit provides Fantastic views of the Coral Sea and the other islands in the vicinity. The resort has a beautiful swimming pool and many aquatic activities to take part in. Orpheus Island is one of the most beautiful and laid back island resorts anywhere in Queensland and is a great place to relax for a few days without the pressures of mainstream living. »» Orpheus Island |
