Green Island

Green Island is a coral cay that lies within easy reach of Cairns in tropical north Queensland and it is home to a five star resort. Green Island is one of the closest coral cays to the mainland and has been a tourist destination for generations. It has the oldest underwater observatory in Queensland which is still in operation and hundreds of thousands of tourists have had their first Great Barrier Reef experience at Green Island. Regular daily ferry services connect it to Cairns and thousands of day trippers still come to see the island, walk into the water right off the beach and start snorkeling over the beautiful coral Gardens.

Green Island

The resort on Green Island caters for the upper end of the market and only has around fourty suites. This small number restricts the impact that the resort can have on the local ecosystems and ensures that that impact is manageable. It is a magnificent place to stay. The hotel rooms all have beautiful views and the service and food are excellent. The resort offers diving trips as well as giving information about the reef and the resident wildlife on the island. Like most coral cays on the Great barrier reef, Green Island is a seabird nesting rookery and this is well managed by marine park rangers who patrol the island and its immediate environment.

Visitors to Green Island arrive in Cairns which has an international airport so international visitors can fly in from overseas and then stay right on the reef itself and actually be there within a few hours of their arrival. The greatest attraction of being able to stay on the island is that you can explore the reef at your leisure and not have to return to the mainland at the end of the day. It is a special feeling to be able to snorkel or dive right of the beach beside your resort and spend as much of the day as you like in the water enjoying your fantastic surroundings.

Green Island and its beautiful resort are one of the best ways to get up close and personal and enjoy your Great Barrier Reef experience.
