The resort on Dunk Island in tropical north Queensland has been almost completely rebuilt since it was badly damaged by the category five tropical cyclone Larry in 2008. Dunk Island was always known as the resort in the rainforest and this is true again now that the beautiful gardens surrounding the resort have had a chance to regenerate. Dunk Island is in the family group of islands situated close to the Queensland coast, inside the Great Barrier Reef and run from Hinchinbrook Island in the south through to Dunk Island in the north. It is a beautiful waterway and a popular place for cruise ships to stop off and regular local cruises to make part of their itinerary. It is common to see them anchored off Dunk Island in the protected waters between the island and the mainland.
Dunk Island is one of the easiest of the Queensland Islands to get to. It has a regular ferry service from Clump Point near Mission Beach and it also has its own airport and flights arrive daily from Cairns which is a short flight to the north. Guests travelling to Bedarra Island also come to Dunk Island to catch the Bedarra Island transfer.
Dunk Island is one of the most popular family holiday destinations of all the Queensland island resorts. There are so many activities and there is accommodation that suits family groups. While mum is relaxing in the day spa, dad and the kids can play a round of golf on the local course, play tennis or squash, go scuba diving or snorkeling, try the jet ski’s, sailing catamarans, paddle skis, go bushwalking or horse riding or simply play around in one of the great swimming pools. It truly is a fantastic place to take the kids for a great holiday.
The accommodation on Dunk Island comes in three different layouts and the bulk of it is right on the beachfront. You can choose a great room where you can walk straight out onto the beach or you can choose to stay deep in the rainforest. The main restaurant has an open plan and great views over the main swimming pool and the ocean. Mum and dad can sit in the cool of the restaurant enjoying a cool drink and still be able to keep a close eye on the kids enjoying the pool activities.
