The City of Cairns is the largest city in far north Queensland and one of Australia’s biggest tourist draw cards. Cairns is known internationally as the premier tourist destination in Australia from which to visit the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree rainforest region. These are two of the most important wilderness areas remaining on the planet and millions of visitors come here to experience their special attractions. As a diving destination, it is second to none in Australia. Cairns has many dive companies that specialize both in training and in trips to the reef itself. The choice for divers is amazing. Day tours are available on a huge assortment of boats and include both snorkeling, diving for accredited divers, introductory dives and hard hat diving. Extended dive safaris on live aboard boats venture out to some of the worlds best dive sites. The Ribbon reefs to the north, near Lizard Island and the Cod hole are both sensational locations. More remote reefs in the Coral Sea like Mellish reef can now be accessed by dive tours from Cairns. Green Island is only a short boat trip from Cairns and this is a true coral cay that also houses a five star resort. Here you can walk in off the beach and start snorkeling right on the Great Barrier Reef itself. All sorts of other sailing and boating cruises are also available on a daily basis from the Cairns marina.
The Cairns CBD is a tourist paradise. This is where you will find the bulk of the accommodation. There are dozens of Hotels and apartment style resorts. The esplanade area is the most popular place to stay and everything is within walking distance. There is a huge lagoon style swimming pool that covers several acres and is the most popular place to meet during the day. The city is also full of shopping attractions that include interesting night markets and heaps of great Australian restaurants and cafes. Souvenir shopping here is prolific and arcades and plaza’s are located in all different directions. The Cairns hinterland has some fantastic attractions. On the Atherton tableland to the west are pockets of beautiful rainforest, some magnificent lakes, the Undarra lava tubes and places like Kuranda and Atherton that are all fantastic places to visit. Kuranda can be visited on a day tour that includes a trip up the range via the Skyrail gondola and return via the rail link from Kuranda station back to the center of the Cairns CBD. This train trip crosses the spectacular bridge across the Barron River right at the Barron Falls. Day tours are also available to visit the Daintree rainforest, Cape Tribulation or to take a four wheel drive tour along the Bloomfield track and on to see historic Cooktown which lies well to the north of Cairns. This region is an essential part of any Australian travel itinerary and the city of Cairns is the logical place to stay while visiting it.
